"Emily's Place was exactly what we expected from the listing - comfortable, cozy, quiet, peaceful. Thoughtfully furnished and decorated, the owners have taken a century old house and given it new life - quite literally. We really appreciated the whimsical array of flowers in the window boxes. We drove to several nearby attractions, but mostly we stayed at the cottage that is situated within easy walking distance of several restaurants, a nearby grocery store, and other quaint establishments. We want to give a special shout out to Emily who graciously worked with us when we had a last minute glitch in our travel plans."

No need- you can live your fantasy plant parent dreams as they have a lovely garden, plants on the porch, plants in the kitchen, in corners, and even fresh miniature flower arrangements and window boxes. If you love poetry, art, music and are inspired by simple, imperfect but charmingly beautiful things - then Sugartoad will cast you under its spell. It’s easy to walk to the grocery store, the art school/gallery, ice cream and boutique shops….if you even want to leave this lovely furnished home. I cannot say enough about how fantastic my stay was. I was in Mathews for work and was not expecting to be relaxed at all. But the house was so cozy and peaceful. I have not felt that level of “calm” in a long time. The bed was so comfortable, I really wished I could stay longer. Everything was clean. The hosts left snacks and other toiletries in the home which made it feel very welcoming.
The only negative I could possibly level against the location is that there is a Friends of the Library bookstore in walking distance that sells used books for the benefit of local libraries. I am an avid book lover and thankfully was not there during operating hours or I would have left Mathews with far too many new books!!! Truth be told, I’ll probably book a stay (pun intended) again on a Saturday and leave with a pile of books.
I absolutely would stay here again and again! Thank you to the hosts who were so gracious, responsive, and accommodating.

"This location is easily the best place I have had the pleasure of staying at. The hosts are so thoughtful and work to ensure every aspect of your stay is elevated. It was extremely comfortable and very well decorated, with the indoor swing-chair being my favorite part of it all. It is sturdy and very comfortable + relaxing. "This cottage is so amazing! We didn't have to drive anywhere except the beach and enjoyed walking around the little town of Mathews. The farmers market and bookstore on Saturday was an extra treat! The cleanliness and decor of the cottage was perfection and it felt like home for the weekend. Perfect quiet spot for a slow weekend away!"

"The cottage was so charming and cozy! The stylish decor, cleanliness, hot tub, TV, and many amenities made for a fabulous stay. It’s located right in the middle of town with many quaint places to visit within steps, including a grocery store. The people in the town are so friendly, and there are beautiful beaches nearby. I can’t say enough about what a beautiful job the owners have done with the house. They have thought of everything. We loved it there and were sad to leave!"

"Sugar Toad was the perfect, peaceful couple getaway that we needed. We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our 35th anniversary here in Mathews, Virginia. We enjoyed the relaxation that the cottage gave us. Fresh linens, comfortable bed with plush pillows and special personal touches made the stay even more enjoyable. The hot tub was nice and clean which was an added plus that we enjoyed nightly. Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a quaint peaceful place to get away and relax.
